An environmental story we can get behind: Making a living from these scraps.

Nearly half of every pineapple you eat ends up in the trash. But now, companies across the globe are turning the inedible parts of the fruit into textiles, plates, soap, and more.

PIÑATEX is created from Anam PALF® (pineapple leaf fibre by Ananas Anam) made from the leaves of the pineapple plant, a waste product of the food industry that does not use any additional land or water to grow, while also saving carbon emissions by preventing the burning of agricultural waste. Making use of the existing waste of the pineapple harvest brings positive social impact by creating new jobs in rural areas of the Philippines as well as Bangladesh and Ivory Coast, providing an additional and diversified income stream for pineapple farming communities. https://www.ananas-anam.com

“Piñatex® is one of those rare products of design thinking that hits all the sustainability buttons at once: it is a material that is completely cradle to cradle, it substitutes leather that has a very heavy environmental and welfare impact, and it brings new income streams to subsistence farmers, allowing them to fully utilise their crops. The implementation of Piñatex® will have far-reaching societal and environmental benefits.” ~ CLARE BRASS, DIRECTOR, DEPARTMENT 22
